"In 2005 I was sent to Houston, Texas as a part of the International Association for Human Values Hurricane relief team. The place was chaotic. Thousands of evacuees from New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana were packed into the Astrodome and an adjoining convention center. People were in shock, looking for family members, unsure of what to do under such traumatic circumstances in a strange city. Our team of 10 was also a little scattered and in need of some direction.
Brian Carver arrived in Houston with a can-do attitude and organizational skills. In a matter of hours our team was organized into small action groups and we went to work. His coordination of our activities allowed us to offer our trauma relief courses to evacuees all over the city in community centers, churches and motels.
